The main function of the iron runner is to separate high-temperature molten iron from slag. Through devices such as the slag skimmer, slag flows over the top of the skimmer weir into the slag channel, while molten iron passes through the iron channel at the bottom of the weir.

The refractory used in blast furnace iron runners need to operate under extremely harsh conditions. Therefore, they are required to have excellent high-temperature wear resistance, chemical erosion resistance, thermal shock resistance, and oxidation resistance. ASC castables are generally used, and through reasonable casting techniques, the service life of the iron runner can be significantly extended.
