According to the latest statistics from the World Steel Association (WSA), global crude steel production will reach 1.8826 billion tons in 2024, a year-on-year decrease of 0.8%.
On January 24, the World Steel Association released global crude steel production data for December 2024. In December 2024, the crude steel production of 71 countries and regions included in the World Steel Association statistics was 144.5 million tons, an increase of 5.6% year-on-year.

In December 2024, Africa’s crude steel production was 1.9 million tonnes, a decrease of 1.0% year-on-year; Asia and Oceania’s crude steel production was 106.3 million tonnes, an increase of 9.0% year-on-year; the EU (27 countries) produced 9.6 million tonnes of crude steel, an increase of 7.2% year-on-year; other European countries produced 3.3 million tonnes of crude steel, a decrease of 14.3% year-on-year; the Middle East produced 4.6 million tonnes of crude steel, a decrease of 4.5% year-on-year; North America produced 8.8 million tonnes of crude steel, a decrease of 4.3% year-on-year; Russia and other CIS countries + Ukraine produced 6.8 million tonnes of crude steel, a decrease of 6.8% year-on-year; South America produced 3.1 million tonnes of crude steel, a decrease of 3.8% year-on-year.

Looking at the world’s top 10 steel producing countries (regions), in December 2024, China’s crude steel output was 75.97 million tons, an increase of 11.8% year-on-year; India’s crude steel output was 13.6 million tons, an increase of 9.5% year-on-year; Japan’s crude steel output was 6.9 million tons, a decrease of 1.1% year-on-year; the United States’ crude steel output was 6.7 million tons, a decrease of 2.4% year-on-year; Russia’s estimated crude steel output was 5.7 million tons, a decrease of 8.6% year-on-year; South Korea’s crude steel output was 5.2 million tons, a decrease of 3.2% year-on-year; Turkey’s crude steel output was 3 million tons, a decrease of 7.6% year-on-year; Germany’s crude steel output was 2.7 million tons, an increase of 4.1% year-on-year; Brazil’s crude steel output was 2.6 million tons, an increase of 1.8% year-on-year; Iran’s crude steel output was 2.6 million tons, a decrease of 8.2% year-on-year.

In December 2024, from the perspective of blast furnace pig iron production, the pig iron production of 37 countries (regions) in the world was 1016.34 million tons, an increase of 6.2% year-on-year. Among them, by region, the pig iron production of the European Union (27 countries) was 5.4 million tons, an increase of 6.1% year-on-year; the pig iron production of other European countries was 900,000 tons, a decrease of 31.2% year-on-year; the pig iron production of Russia and other CIS countries + Ukraine was 5.12 million tons, a decrease of 1.8% year-on-year; the pig iron production in North America is expected to be 2.38 million tons, a decrease of 3.0% year-on-year; the pig iron production in South America is 2.38 million tons, a decrease of 0.1% year-on-year; the pig iron production in Asia is 84.73 million tons (of which the Chinese mainland is 66.7 million tons), an increase of 8.1% year-on-year; the pig iron production in Oceania is 280,000 tons, a decrease of 10.1% year-on-year. In 2024, the global cumulative production of pig iron is 1.266 billion tons, a year-on-year decrease of 1.8%.
In December 2024, the output of direct reduced iron (DRI) in 13 countries around the world was 8.89 million tons, a year-on-year decrease of 16.1%. Among them, India’s direct reduced iron output was 4.86 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 6.8%; Iran’s direct reduced iron output was 520,000 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 80.3%. In 2024, the output of direct reduced iron in 13 countries around the world was 125 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 3.7%.
